A shy bow from her sweet petals
In THE SECRET OF EVERYTHING, Tessa is an amateur photographer. So am I, though in typical writerly fashion, she is far more gifted than I. Still, I do love getting a good shot.
One of my great desires has always been to have a greenhouse. In a corner of my dining room is a small conservatory, a Victorian imitation, and within are a cyclamen and African violets. This morning, this cyclamen was blooming and I spent an hour admiring it, shooting the light on its petals, diving into a wordless orgy of appreciation. There is something so quiet and renewing about flowers, something that heals all those little broken spots and makes you feel you might be able to take a deep breath and keep moving after all.
If I had a greenhouse, I’d probably never get any writing done. I’d just be in there, shooting photos from twelve angles, breathing in the fresh exhalations of the leaves.
Is there some small beauty in your life that stops you exactly in your tracks?

I, too, LOVE taking any photo outdoors, but what makes me stops me in my tracks is having a clear blue sky day in cold, cold Michigan and seeing and hearing a beautiful hawk soaring overhead or one sitting contently fluffed up on a big, leafless old tree!

Sorry about that double entry Barbara! Second entry is gramatically correct!
Tammee, either one is beautiful, thank you.
Two things stop me in my tracks at my current home –
I have a japonica camellia outside my side door and I baby it. I cover it with sheets if there is an early freeze and I hand pick out fallen leaves from its branches. When it blooms in late-November and December it brings joy to my heart. I too take picture after picture of the blooms, they are individual, varied and very photogenic. I want to get a few sasanqua camellias for my yard as well so I can enjoy some February blooms.
The second thing that captures my heart is my child’s face. He’s seven now and has lost an upper and a lower tooth so he looks somewhat like a jack o’lantern, and he presently has a black eye due to a hula hoop incident, but his sweet face just blows me away.
And Barbara – I had a cyclamen that brought me pleasure for years, I forgot about her, I need to purchase another.
